Welcome to Year 6

Cogheart Complete!

Wow, what a finale! Year 6 have now finished Cogheart by Peter Bunzl and what a journey it has been. We only wish we could wind back the clocks and start again (pun fully intended)…

If you would like to continue the Cogheart magic and join Lily, Robert and the unflappable Malkin on their next adventures, then the next book is Moonlocket. Here are links to the books, available in all good bookshops.

Hello and welcome to the Year 6 Class of 2024 class page!

Here, we will share with you our incredible learning, our adventures and all news relating to our class.

Please find information below about what is coming up in the second half-term!

Key Information

In Autumn 2, Year 6 will shift their focus to calculating. We will start by revisiting column multiplication and short division. After we have secured this, we will progress into long column multiplication and long division – two challenges which, with some effort and determination, we will nail!

If you would like some more resources to help at home with Maths, here are some great ideas:

Corbett Maths Primary – video tutorials accompanied with practice questions (and answers). Please note that sometimes different language to what we use in school may be used – this is absolutely okay and it is beneficial for students to learn that there are multiple ways of saying and doing things.

We will finish Cogheart and then it is my turn to choose the book for this term! Together, we will be reading “When the Sky Falls” by Philip Earle. This book will be a fantastic conclusion to our learning on the Second World War. We will continue to revisit this learning throughout the year but our main focus in the afternoons will be shifting. The main character in the book has dyslexia, which will be fantastic for our students to learn about and feel what it is like to live with! Please let me know if you would like any further information on this.

Inspired by a true story. It’s 1940, and Joseph has been packed off to stay with Mrs F, a gruff woman with no great fondness for children. To Joseph’s amazement, she owns the rundown city zoo where Joseph meets Adonis, a huge silverback gorilla. Adonis is ferociously strong and dangerous, but Joseph finds he has an affinity with the lonely beast. But when the bombs begin to fall, it is up to Joseph to guard Adonis’s cage should it be damaged by a blast. Will Joseph be ready to pull the trigger if it comes to it?

When the Sky Falls (Paperback)

Year 6 will be using a range of different writing stimuli this year. In Autumn 2, we will be using an amazing picture book called, ‘The Arrival’ to write farewell letters and a journal entry. The themes in this book include refugees and escaping war, an incredibly poignant and relevant topic. If you would like more information on this, please do come and see me.

In History, we will continue to learn about the Second World War (although this will not be our main focus in the afternoons). Currently, Year 6 are working on creating table top museum displays. We would love to invite you in when we are finished!

In Science, we will be learning about light and shadows. Please get in touch if you feel like this is something you could help us with!

Important! Our PE days are changing to Wednesdays. We will be doing swimming and dance. Please continue to come in school in your PE kit but, this time, please pack a swimming kit in a separate bag. This should include swim wear, a towel, goggles and any other accessories you normally take for swimming. Please get in touch with Mr Richards or Mrs Furber if there is anything we can support you with.

Remember to do little and often (we recommend between 10 – 20 minutes a night).

Have the Wenlock Olympian mindset of going for gold!

Log into SpellingFrame to find the spellings for this week, which are words ending in -able and -ible.

Practice/play as many games as you want for Spelling Points.

Do one test each night to measure your progress.

Although there are twelve words to practice, the test will only choose 5 of these words at random. Remember that Spelling Frame gives you multiple chances to learn the word if you make a mistake.
